During AANHPI Heritage Month, we proudly recognize individuals who are making a lasting impact on their communities through innovation, advocacy, and a deep sense of purpose. One such individual is Koa Lanakila Chang, a Stanford University sophomore and a remarkable leader whose mission to democratize access to education is both inspiring and transformative.
A Lifelong Commitment to Learning and Service
Originally from Honolulu and a proud graduate of Kamehameha Schools, Koa’s journey began in high school where he started developing digital tools to support students’ academic growth. His early creations, KumuBot and WorksheetWizz, reflect a commitment to accessibility, cultural relevance, and educational equity.
WorksheetWizz was born from Koa’s belief that all students, regardless of background, deserve the opportunity to succeed. By offering free, downloadable worksheets and resources online, WorksheetWizz allows learners with internet access to work independently and at their own pace. This tool complements in-person tutoring and continues to be used by students across communities.

Koa’s work doesn’t stop with academics. With KumuBot, he takes a culturally rich and technologically forward approach to preserving and promoting Hawaiian language and culture. Built using the latest advances in AI, KumuBot is designed to make Hawaiian language learning accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. The tool has already made an impact at Kamehameha Schools, where both students and faculty have used it to enhance their understanding of Hawaiian culture.

A Mission Rooted in Community
Koa describes his mission clearly:
“Children are the future of our society so it is imperative that we set them up for success. Our generation is primed with the opportunity to do something great.”
These words speak to his vision—not just of what education can be, but of the responsibility we all share in shaping a better future.
Currently, Koa is pursuing a degree in Computer Science at Stanford University. Despite his busy schedule, he continues to tutor and mentor others, both in person, online, and through the tools he builds.
Living the Mission of the Ho’omau Foundation
Koa embodies the values of the Ho’omau Foundation, not only in the classroom but far beyond it. He uplifts others, shares knowledge freely, and uses innovation as a means to empower. His dedication to improving systems and making learning more equitable exemplifies what it means to be a changemaker in the AANHPI community.
